How to Archive LinkedIn Messages (and Restore Them)

Archiving moves a conversation to the Archived folder, where you can restore it; deleting is permanent. Steps for both, plus bulk archive and the ads that archive themselves.

On this page

Archiving moves a LinkedIn conversation out of your main inbox list and into the Archived folder, where you can open or restore it at any time. It is not deletion. LinkedIn's Archive your conversations (opens in a new tab) page says archived conversations can be accessed and restored from the Archived folder, while deleting a conversation (opens in a new tab) is permanent.

That single difference decides which action to use when your outreach inbox gets crowded.

Archive versus delete

ActionWhere the conversation goesReversible?Other person's copy
ArchiveArchived folderYes — restore itUnchanged
DeleteRemoved from your inboxNo — LinkedIn says you cannot restore or access itLinkedIn says it is not removed from the recipient's inbox

Use archive when you want a thread out of sight but still findable. Use delete only when you are certain you will never need the thread again, because LinkedIn states deleted conversations cannot be restored.

How to archive a conversation

LinkedIn gives steps for both surfaces:

Desktop

  1. Click the Messaging icon at the top of your homepage, or the conversation window at the lower right.
  2. Open the conversation.
  3. Click the More icon near the upper-right corner of the conversation.
  4. Click Archive.

Mobile

  1. Tap the Messaging icon in the upper right.
  2. Open the conversation.
  3. Tap the More icon in the upper right.
  4. Tap Archive.

Where archived conversations go, and how to restore one

Archived threads live in the Archived folder inside Messaging. LinkedIn's View and restore archived conversations (opens in a new tab) page shows two routes on desktop: use the inbox category dropdown and select Archived, or open the conversation window and use the filter icon in the search bar to choose Archived. Open the conversation, then click More and Restore.

On mobile, tap Messaging, use the inbox category dropdown, select Archived, open the conversation, and tap More then Unarchive or Restore. LinkedIn also notes you can swipe left on a conversation and tap the restore option.

Archiving in bulk

You do not have to archive one at a time. LinkedIn's bulk actions (opens in a new tab) page describes selecting multiple conversations at once: open Messaging, click More and Manage conversations, tick the conversations you want, then choose the archive icon. On mobile, press and hold a conversation to enter selection mode, tick the others, and use the option at the bottom of the screen. The same view also deletes and marks conversations read or unread — so read the action labels before you confirm, because the delete option there is the irreversible one.

What gets archived automatically

Not everything in your Archived folder was put there by you. LinkedIn states that Sponsored Messaging ads are automatically moved to the Archived folder between 20 and 40 days after you receive them, and that you can still access them there. If you see messages you did not archive, that is why.

Using archive in an outreach inbox

This is a process recommendation, not a measured workflow. LinkedIn's messaging filters — Focused, Other, Archived and Spam, plus filters such as Unread, My Connections, Starred and InMail — give you categories to work from, as described on the filters and search (opens in a new tab) page.

A simple routine:

  1. Work the Focused inbox. Reply or decide on each new message.
  2. Archive conversations that are finished but worth keeping, so the main list stays about what needs action.
  3. Leave anything you still owe a reply in place; archiving hides it from your default view.
  4. Restore a thread when you need to continue it.

One limitation to keep in mind: archiving is an action on your own account. It does not change the other person's inbox, delete the thread or end the relationship — the delete page makes the same point about deletion not deleting or blocking the connection. Archiving is inbox housekeeping, not a message-management strategy on its own. To look over one vendor's LinkedIn outreach tooling, you can review Clapa's overview; the archive behaviour itself is LinkedIn's.

FAQ

Does archiving a LinkedIn message delete it? No. Archiving moves the conversation to the Archived folder, where you can open and restore it. Deletion is permanent.

How do I check archived messages on LinkedIn? Open Messaging, use the inbox category dropdown, and select Archived. On desktop you can also use the filter icon in the search bar.

Can someone still message me if I archive them? Archiving only changes your own inbox view; LinkedIn documents it as organisation, not a block. The conversation stays in your Archived folder.

Why did a message archive itself? LinkedIn says Sponsored Messaging ads are automatically moved to your Archived folder between 20 and 40 days after receipt.
